As a result of millions of years of evolution, marine environments offer us organisms and their compounds that we can use in everyday life: food, feed, cosmetics, medicine, in various industries and much more.
The process from initial sea exploration (bioprospecting) to find organisms and compounds of interesting potential uses, includes also their production and testing – so we have functional and safe products in sufficient quantities. One aspect of this science is however often overlooked – the legal backbone. Important to mention, there is legislation protecting the countries where an organism was samples/harvested for the first time. Also, such research has to be conducted responsibly.
