Job description: We are seeking a highly skilled post-doctoral researcher with demonstrated expertise in microbial fermentation and downstream natural product chemistry. The candidate will initially optimize the upscaled fermentation (300 L) of target marine fungi and extract the fungal broth. This will be followed by i) LC-MS/MS-based untargeted metabolomics analysis, ii) mass spectrometry- and bioactivity-guided isolation and iii) structure elucidation of anticancer fungal metabolites. The candidate will work closely with project partners at Kiel University for determination of in vivo efficacy and mechanism of action of the target molecules. The candidate will actively manage the project and expected to write publications/patents/project reports and contribute to assessment of project results for potential development.

This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious post-doctoral researcher to further develop their career on microbial drug discovery and development that can make impact on human life.

S/he will be a national of a CIESM Member State, will have at least 15 years of professional research experience and proven leadership skills to assume overall responsibility in the management of the Commission and guide its international Science Council with a broad vision and creativity. The post requires fluency in English, a good level in French (both written and oral), and a personality capable to assert the intellectual independence and multi-cultural sensitivity of the Commission.

Job description:

Analytical chemistry is the backbone of natural product research. We are seeking a motivated and experienced post-doctoral candidate with demonstrated expertise in hyphenated analytical techniques on marine (microbial) natural products. The main task of the holder of this post will be LC-MS/MS-based metabolome mining/chemical profiling employing algorithm/bioinformatic approaches (MS/MS fragment similarity based molecular networking) and coupling them with other omics datasets (e.g., genomics, lipidomics, metallomics, peptidomics, metagenomics, etc). The successful candidate will develop and apply the latest LC-MS/MS tools in drug discovery and chemical ecology projects on mainly marine microorganisms and their small molecule natural products. The candidate will also perform spatial metabolomics using the in-house Desorption Electrospray Ionization-Imaging Mass Spectrometer (DESI-IMS). He/she will closely interact with other research groups from a broad range of scientific disciplines. Job description: PhD position at GEOMAR (ESR5; Extremophilic microorganisms against human, agricultural and aquacultural infections) will focus on understudied marine microorganisms, such as Gram-negative bacteria that are predominant in the ocean including extreme environments. Specific objectives will include optimized cultivation of microorganisms; extraction and screening against human, crop and fish pathogens; deep MS/MS based metabolomics using molecular networks/GNPS platform; genomic mining/screening to inform the isolation of the secondary metabolites; purification and structure elucidation of bioactive molecules; analysis of the key components of the biosynthetic gene clusters leading to hit bioactive molecules and preclinical studies on compounds, including mechanism of biological activity and ADMET profiling.

PhD Position in Microbial Natural Products Chemistry – Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network HOTBIO

 

Fundacion MEDINA is looking for one PhD candidate with expertise in marine natural products biotechnology to discover new natural antibiotics from marine microorganisms active against human, plant and fish pathogens.

 

Job description: This position is associated to the Doctoral Network HOTBIO funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Program. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team working in the field of microbial natural products chemistry to develop a PhD project focused on the identification of new antibiotics from marine derived microbial sources. Starting from an available collection of microbial extracts from ~200 marine derived strains already available at MEDINA, generated using a One Strain Many Compounds (OSMAC) approach by growing each strain in 5 different selected culture media, the candidate will perform:
1) Testing of this extract collection against human, plant, and fish pathogens.
2) Dereplication of the best bioactive hits using LC/HRMS and LC-MS/MS analyses combined with the use of internal spectral databases, the Dictionary of Natural Products (DNP) and the Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) and selection of the best candidates for fractionation.
3) Scaled-up fermentation, extraction, and fractionation of best candidates (3-30 L) for the bioassay-guided purification of the bioactive molecules.
4) Structural elucidation of new molecules obtained using HRMS and NMR approaches.
5) Full profiling of the bioactive compounds against an extended panel of pathogens and other assays available from different consortium partners as well ADME-Tox assessment of the new molecules.
6) Genome mining of the strains yielding the most interesting candidates to identify the biosynthetic gene clusters (BGC) responsible for their production.

PhD Position in Fungal Natural Products Biosynthesis

 

Fundacion MEDINA is looking for one PhD candidate with expertise in natural products biosynthesis to explore the biosynthetic diversity of minor fungal taxa and contribute to boost the discovery of novel bioactive fungal natural products.

 

Job description:The candidate will develop a multidisciplinary study on a selection of candidate fungal strains with the potential to produce novel bioactive chemical entities. The process will involve the exploitation of the fungal metabolome diversity from an array of production conditions, including the use of metabolomic networking tools, the bioassay-guided isolation and structural elucidation of selected new molecules, and the application of genome mining tools from high quality genome sequences to identify the biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) involved in their biosynthesis and predict the mechanism of biosynthesis. All the molecules of interest derived from the project will be profiled for their bioactivity in the broad panel of assays available at MEDINA.

Two secondments at other participants institutions are foreseen to expand knowledge on fungal genome mining and BGCs reconstruction related with the annotation and application of new fungal pathways prediction tools (secondment 1), and the industrial production optimization and scale-up of bioactive fungal molecules of interest (secondment 2).

PhD researcher BlueCC – Commercial exploitation of marine collagen and chitin from marine sources

This PhD position is situated within the research project BlueCC, Commercial exploitation of marine collagen and chitin from marine sources, related to valorisation of marine biomass. BlueCC is an interdisciplinary project with 6 international partners. The BlueCC project aims to make use of underutilised marine species such as invasive and by-catch species or cleaner fish from the aquaculture industry to develop new eco-friendly marine ingredients and products in a market acceptance approach. The focus will be on sustainably exploiting chitin and collagen produced by invasive crabs, jellyfish, starfish and cleaner fish, and to demonstrate a prototype product containing these polymers.
