Job description: The announcement is made for five (5) post-doctoral contracts with the aim of increasing the
number of qualified doctors within the Complementary Marine Sciences action Plan, as per the following distribution criteria:

  •  2 x L1 line contracts, “Observation and monitoring of the marine and coastal environment.”
  • 2 x L2 line contracts, “Sustainable, smart and precision aquaculture”.

Job description: The main objective of this PhD project is to study the formation, occurrence and variability of ocean fronts both in contemporary and future climates, and how they contribute to the structuring of marine life. It focuses on the Mozambique Channel (extending from 12°S to 25°S between Madagascar and the African mainland), a highly turbulent oceanic region housing diverse coastal and pelagic ecosystems that support crucial socio-economical activities (fisheries, tourism, etc…). This topic falls within the UN Sustainable Development Goals #13 and #14.

Job description: Environmental DNA (eDNA) comprises the collection of DNA that occurs in the environment (water, air, soil) through the presence of e.g. reproductive cells and larvae or through released skin cells and mucus. The eDNA is thus isolated from the environment and not from the organism itself, which provides some very relevant applications for marine environmental monitoring research.

PhD researcher BlueCC – Commercial exploitation of marine collagen and chitin from marine sources

This PhD position is situated within the research project BlueCC, Commercial exploitation of marine collagen and chitin from marine sources, related to valorisation of marine biomass. BlueCC is an interdisciplinary project with 6 international partners. The BlueCC project aims to make use of underutilised marine species such as invasive and by-catch species or cleaner fish from the aquaculture industry to develop new eco-friendly marine ingredients and products in a market acceptance approach. The focus will be on sustainably exploiting chitin and collagen produced by invasive crabs, jellyfish, starfish and cleaner fish, and to demonstrate a prototype product containing these polymers.
