The global population is increasing and by 2050 it is expected that the population will rise to 9.5 billion people. In parallel, the global meat consumption is also increasing and by 2050 we will need at least 70% more protein than what is available today.
It is expected that aquaculture will become the predominant protein source. This means we need alternative sources for fish diets as alternatives to fish meal and oil. Current alternatives are oils and cereals. However, future alternatives include single cell protein sources, such as bacteria, yeast and algae.
The potential of these organisms comes from marine resources and COST Action Ocean4Biotech is devoted to valorizing this important resource.
