Marine organisms in the vast ocean have developed mechanisms to stick together and to surfaces. They for communities called biofilms that protect microorganisms and enable nutrient exchange. In biofilms, microorganisms shield themselves in a self-produced polymeric matrix. Exploring these matrices gives an insight on how microorganisms cooperate to survive and thrive. Biofilms can also be a source for their biotechnological use to treat chronic diseases, find novel enzymes or remove biofilms from surfaces.
